On Sunday night after a fabulous Mother's Day Taya was coughing all night, by Monday morning she was still coughing, breathing pretty hard, wheezing and complaining of her tummy hurting. I called her dr. and set up an appt for that afternoon. Thru-out the day she progressively got worse, doubled over in tears complaining of her tummy hurting. Jeremy came home early from work and was very worried about her breathing, she was straining to take a breath, looked like her stomach was cramping when she would breath in. I was going to take her to ER but her dr got us in, her doctor immediately checked the oxygen levels in her blood, which typically are 100 hers was 89, they put her on oxygen and a breathing treatment to try and get her numbers up, but once removed from the oxygen mask her numbers immediately dropped back down to 88. Turns out the stomach pain was from her body trying so hard to breath. They sent us by ambulance to Valley Children's Hospital and we were in the ER most of Monday night doing numerous breathing treatments and trying to stabilize her breathing. Sometime that night we were admitted into the hospital, with her doing a 12 hour continuous breathing treatment, then many many other breathing treatments Tuesday thru-out the day. Monday night and Tuesday morning she had to be on continuous oxygen, could not be without the mask without her oxygen level dropping but she was feeling better. After more breathing treatments by 1:30pm she was able to keep her oxygen level up in the 95-96 range without oxygen and hasn't had to use it since. She was doing much better, Tuesday afternoon she was up and jumping and playing sounding like herself. We were released from the hospital around noon today, and she is on inhalers, and prednisone. The doctors would have let her come home last night but had to do some additional xrays because of an "unclear" object in her right lung, thankfully it was nothing. As much as I wanted to come home last night I am glad we stayed, she slept well, I was able to sleep and by 2 am her lungs had cleared and her oxygen level was 100!
Apparently she had an asthma attack triggered by either a viral infection or an allergy. She has a doctors appointment tomorrow for a follow up and we will be doing some additional testing.
She is happy to be home, she missed her sister the most and wanted to go to school. I asked her what's the first thing she wanted to do when she got home was and she said nap...so that is what she is doing...catching up on the lack of sleep from the past 3-4 days. Her body was working very hard to breath, it was a very scary time and we are so thankful to have her home and getting healthy again.
I will always remember Apollo room 511 and the last 3 days... lots of pink balloons that somehow kept disappearing, lots of coloring, art projects, and Dora the Explorer, we had some awesome nurses, Taya got so many stickers that by Tuesday night she said, "Mom I don't want anymore stickers!", she got to eat whatever she wanted, and I think Jeremy & I would have given her just about anything the girl asked for!!! Thank goodness a pony wasn't on the list of wants.
